Explain your machine in one sentence. Part 1.

Welcome to "Explain your machine in one sentence", a small series about a big problem in technical industries: brilliant machines described in language nobody outside the engineering team understands. In each post, I take a real product description, show why it loses people, and rewrite it in one clear sentence. No companies named, no harm done, just a practical look at how much stronger technical communication gets when clarity comes first.

KMA Draping system - hand-drawn illustration

Found at the very beginning of a machine builder's project page (translated from German):

"For producing titanium safety helmets with composite materials, the PE preform is draped using the draping unit."

Technically precise, but for the first line of product introduction it is not painting the clear picture from the start. And I still have no clue of what this machine actually does for me.

Here's the same sentence for everyone else:

"Our machine shapes the crucial material that goes into titanium safety helmets."

Alternatively:

"We build the machines that give titanium safety helmets their protective shell."

Or:

"If you've ever worn a titanium safety helmet, a machine like ours formed its layers into shape."

Why does the short version come first? Because nobody reads technical details about something they don't understand yet. The one line earns you the right to be read. Once someone gets what the machine does, they want the details, and that's exactly where your engineering terms belong: right below, for the people who are now listening.

Lead with what it does for the reader. Then elaborate as much as you want. The order is the whole trick.

Got a sentence on your own website that needs this treatment? Send it over, I might feature it next week.
